About 'The Rebetissa' Web Site:
This site was created and maintained [but not very often!] by an admirer of rebetika and rebetisses who did research in Greece in the late 1980's to early 1990's on the lives and work of of the Rebetisses - the women who sing the rebetiko tragoudi.
The project involved participant observation and socio-historical research for a PhD in the Dept. of Anthropology, University College, University of London [unfinished]. The main aim of this website is to contribute to the information available about the rebetiko tragoudi on the web. There is very little information about the involvement of women in the production of the rebetiko and the more serious student of the genre may be disappointed with the relative lack of a critical view in the various histories of the style available on the Web. We hope that this site will be useful as well as entertaining.
Thanks for visiting!
